What is a Colposcopy?

A colposcopy is a procedure conducted by a specialist gynaecologist to take a closer look at your cervix, vagina and vulva. Your doctor will use a speculum and a magnifying instrument, called a colposcope. Think of a colposcope as a pair of binoculars with a bright light, to allow for great vision.

Sometimes your doctor may also coat your cervix with a special fluid to help show any abnormalities that they’re looking for.

The doctor may also take a small tissue sample from your cervix during your procedure. This sample will be used for further examination in the lab.

You’ll find a colposcopy to be very similar to a smear test, it will take around 10-15 minutes. It’s not painful, but hey, we know you’d prefer to be doing something more fun than this

Reasons you might need a Colposcopy:

  • You have experienced bleeding after sex

  • Your Cervical Screening Test (formerly Pap Smear) has shown some abnormalities that need further review

  • Your cervix is showing abnormal signs.

A colposcopy can be used to confirm a diagnosis of a few things, genital warts, inflammation and yes, cervical cancer, vaginal cancer and vulval cancer.
One in 1000 women referred for colposcopy are found to have cancer.
