IUD (Intra uterine device) requires a script from your GP/ Specialist and are purchased from a pharmacy.

Generally you will require an initial appointment with your gynaecologist to discuss if the IUD is suitable and appropriate for you. You can then book a follow up appointment to have the IUD inserted. The IUD Insertion can be done in the consulting rooms or as a day procedure in Hospital.
If you book to have the IUD inserted in the rooms, find below some helpful information:

Prior to IUD insertion:

You can take pain relief 30 min prior to your appointment (such as Nurofen & Buscopan) to help ease cramping. The IUD is usually inserted approximately 7 days after the start of your cycle. This may not be relevant for all patients, and is best discussed with your doctor. After consulting with your specialist, it may be done outside this time. The procedure itself takes approximately 10-15 mins.

Post IUD insertion:

The insertion of an IUD can be uncomfortable. Afterwards, you may experience some cramping similar to period pain, and occasionally some dizziness may occur. These symptoms usually disappear after a few hours, but if they persist or you are concerned, please contact your specialist. After the insertion most people can drive and return to work/ usual daily activities. If you require time off work we can provide a medical certificate.
After the IUD is inserted, it is recommended you do not insert anything into your vagina for 48 hours, this includes avoiding sexual intercourse, tampons, menstrual cups, swimming and baths.
You can expect some spotting or light bleeding for the first 3-6 months. Your specialist will advise when they would like to see you for a follow up (usually within 4-6 weeks).

If you have any further questions, please contact our rooms.
